Personal Statement

I studied for my undergraduate degree at Stirling and masters degree at the University of Kent at Canterbury. Before embarking on an academic career I gained retail experience by working for Barkers of Kensington and Harrods. I joined the Institute for Retail Studies initially as a Research Fellow on two retail specific projects, before taking up a lectureship with the MBA in Retailing Distance Learning Programme. I currently hold a post of Senior Lectureship within the Department of Marketing.


Research

My main research interests are in the broad area of internal marketing, and the field of human resource management within the retail sector. In particular this has focused on gender differentation, career development issues and stress.

Teaching and Learning

I have wide teaching experience involving contributions to post graduate, undergraduate and post experience programmes within the Faculty of Management. I am currently Chief Examiner for the Department of Marketing and the Institute for Retail Studies. I have previously held the roles of Director of Learning and Teaching within the Department of Marketing and Director of the MBA in Retail Distance Learning Programme. At postgraduate level I co-ordinate the modules 'Managing People', 'Advanced HRM', 'Research Evaluation and Design' and 'Dissertation'. At undergraduate level I have co-ordinated various modules including the third year marketing core module in Marketing Research (MKT9MR), the fourth year retail marketing core module - HRM/Location Stratgey in Retailing (RET9R7) and the third year marketing option, Services Marketing (MKT9SM).

As part of my commitment to teaching and learning at a university and inter-university level, I have co-ordinated and taught on staff development programmes aimed at the management of personal and professional development.
